Medication and Immunization
Welcome back! Here are a few items to keep in mind:
Immunizations…
- Checking of student immunization status is under way in each building. Please call your school and ask to speak to the nurse or health aide if you have any immunization questions.
- Watch your mailboxes for delinquency letters that will be mailed home in the following weeks if your student is not up to date. Remember your student must have proof of being immunized in the health office within 20 days of enrollment.
Medications…
- Please be aware that ALL medication must be brought to school in the original container. This includes cough drops. Medication that is brought in envelops, zip lock bags, or student pockets cannot be dispensed at school!
- All medication is to be stored in the health office in a locked area.
- The Authorization To Possess and Self –Administer Medication form must be signed by the parent and the physician and be on file in the health office when a physician determines that it is necessary for a child’s health to carry their medication (epipens or inhalers). You can obtain these forms from any school health office.
- The Authorization to Administer Medication form must be completed by the parent and physician for maintenance (daily) medication (both prescription and non- prescription) to be dispensed.
- The Authorization to Administer Medication form must be completed by a parent for over-the-counter medication to be dispensed. Over-the-counter medication cannot be given for more days than the medication label specifies without a physician order. Most over-the-counter medication labels state 5-7 days. If a medication is given several days in a row it is no longer considered an “as needed medication”, but becomes a maintenance medication, which requires a physician’s signature. (Example: Tylenol cannot be given for several days in a row unless there is a physician order on file). Although many over-the-counter medications are very safe to take for short periods of time, they can be detrimental to your child’s health if taken too frequently.
- If your child requires a short-term medication (sinus meds, cough meds, cough drops, etc) during the school year for a sudden illness such as a cold, cough, or stomach virus we will dispense that medication according to the label directions, not to exceed 7 consecutive days, with only the parent signature on the medication form. If the illness lasts longer than 7 days and medication will still be needed, a physician’s order will be required.
- Please pick up any remaining short-term medications at the end of the treatment. We will send reminder letters as necessary.
- Please feel free to call the school health office with any questions regarding medication or immunizations.
