John Young Middle School
John Young Middle School is dedicated to the continuous improvement of our students’ educational, physical, and social development.
Dear Jaguar Community,
I hope all is well with you and your family. We miss seeing the students in the building at JYMS!
I am sure most of you are aware of the SCM Roadmap to Reopening that was released earlier this week. JYMS would like to take this opportunity to update you on what the administrative team is working on to help balance educational goals with the safety of our students and staff.
Our current plan is to get every student scheduled for in-person classes and assigned to a hallway for this August with the understanding that adjustments will have to be made as families decide what is best for their student in regards to in-person or virtual instruction through SCM. Many students have already completed their course request. For those who have not, please do so by Monday July 13th so schedules and hallway assignments can be completed. After July 13 course selection will be generated randomly by Skyward. To complete course selections follow these steps:
- Log into Skyward (please do not use the app)
- Select your student that is, or will be, attending John Young Middle School
- Look for the tile that says, “Course Request.” It should be at the end of all the tiles.
- For 7th Graders:
Choose between Band, Orchestra, Choir, or Drama and click on “Add,” which will appear between the two boxes
- For 8th Graders:
Choose between Band, Orchestra, Choir, or Drama
- You cannot chose to be in Band or Orchestra unless you took it as a 7th Grader
- Choose three of the six electives and click on “Add,” which will appear between the two boxes
- Click on “Alternates”
- Rank the three other choices (in case any of your first choices are full)
- Click on Save in the upper left corner
Parents, we have a few openings in all 7th grade honor courses (Pre- Alg 2, English, Social Studies and Science) . If your student is interested in honor classes please apply by July 13th at: https://forms.gle/sFFrdNmWakkNDC6i7
Lastly, the administrative team is working on plans for the most effective ways to social distance before school, in classrooms, during passing periods, at lunch, and at dismissal. We will continue to communicate with parents, students, and staff as things evolve over the next few weeks.
I am proud of SCM and the Mishawaka community for their participation and collaboration to develop a reopening plan that prioritizes educational goals as well as the safety of our students and staff.
