Superintendent Candidate Announced

May 18, 2022

The School City of Mishawaka (SCM) Board of School Trustees has learned from Mr. Wayne Barker that he intends to resign his position as Superintendent of Schools on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, to be effective on June 30, 2022, pending his approval as Superintendent of Schools at Northwest Allen County Schools in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Barker has served SCM for three (3) years as Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Barker stated, “I feel very blessed for my time serving SCM. I am thankful for all of the relationships I have built with students, staff, community members, and school board members. This is a wonderful school community that is poised to continue its upward trajectory. My wife, Vicki, and I cannot thank you enough for the great care you have shown to us during our time together.”

SCM Board Vice-President Mrs. Amanda Roberts said, “Mishawaka demands excellence in its leadership not just for personal and professional growth of the individual but of the team and of the organization as a whole. For the last three years, Wayne has been an exceptional superintendent and inspired his leaders to be creative, thoughtful and impactful. They in turn are growing more leaders and building this community in strides. He is a kind, servant leader who listens, not to respond but to solve. He is wise enough to understand who needs to be the point guard and who is the shooting guard. We have enjoyed his leadership, his confidence in the team, and are encouraged that he made School City of Mishawaka a better place for students, staff, teachers, and all stakeholders.”

Mrs. Holly Parks, president of the Board of School Trustees of School City of Mishawaka, today identified Dr. Theodore Stevens as their top candidate for superintendent. “I am excited for the opportunity to welcome back Dr. Stevens to School City of Mishawaka! His history of success at the building and district level give me confidence in his ability to guide us into the future,” said Parks. She plans to introduce a motion seeking to offer Stevens a superintendent contract as soon as possible.

This would be Stevens’ second tenure with SCM. Dr. Theodore Stevens first came to Mishawaka to serve as Principal of LaSalle Elementary School from 2013-2015. After two years at LaSalle, he transferred to the School City of Mishawaka Administrative Center to become the Director of Assessment, High Ability Programs, and Technology. While in this role, he helped to draft the SCM Technology Plan, which was a major component of the successful 2016 referendum. Dr. Stevens served as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction from 2016-2018. In 2018, he accepted the superintendent's position at South Central Community School Corporation in Union Mills, Indiana, where he has been serving as their Superintendent since that time.

In compliance with Indiana Code § 20-26-5-4.3, the timeline will proceed as follows:

  • May 22 – publication of the details of the proposed contract;
  • June 2 at 2:00 p.m. – public meeting for SCM Board to receive public input on the proposed contract;
  • June 8 at 6:00 p.m. – public meeting for SCM Board to accept Mr. Barker’s resignation as superintendent;
  • June 9 at 2:00 p.m. – special public meeting to conduct board vote on the contract;
  • July 1 – if approved, Stevens would begin as next SCM superintendent.
