Roadmap to Reopening: Phase II (Beginning September 21, 2020)

    September 2, 2020

    Dear SCM Families,

For several months, the SCM Senior Leadership Team has been working closely with the St. Joseph County Department of Health (SJCDH) and following their guidance as part of our SCM: Roadmap to Reopening 2020 plan. Last week, on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, school districts and local officials across Indiana received further recommendations from the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) regarding state-wide metrics that could be used to inform decisions on reopening schools.

This color-coded metric system places St. Joseph County in the orange category, indicating moderate to high community spread. The state’s recommendation for schools in the orange level is for grade schools to operate with in-person instruction while strongly recommending a hybrid learning model for middle and high school students.

School City of Mishawaka is pleased to announce Phase II of our Roadmap to Reopening 2020 plan which includes the option to bring students back for traditional in-person learning.

Dr. Fox of the St. Joseph County Department of Health and other local health officials are supportive of these recommendations and the SCM Roadmap to Reopening 2020 Phase II plan.

We realize that the decision to return your student to school for in-person learning is a personal/family decision. In an effort to meet the needs of all SCM families, we will continue to offer multiple learning options, including a 100% virtual learning option, and a phased approach for families who wish to return to in-person learning. Phase II allows for those students who wish to return to the classroom to do so safely while also giving families the option to remain home if they desire.

    • Students in grades K-6 will return to school on September 21, 2020, for in-person instruction five days a week from 8:45 AM - 3:00 PM, daily.

    • Students in grades 7-12 will return to school on October 5, 2020, following a 50/50 hybrid learning model. This means students will receive instruction half-time in person and half-time virtually.

    • Growing Together Preschool students return to school on October 1, 2020.

Parents/guardians will need to fill out a commitment form for each child making a selection of in-person instruction or live virtual learning. The commitment form can be accessed at

    • Grades K-6: The elementary commitment form will be available beginning at 5:00 PM on September 2, 2020 through 9:00 PM on September 6, 2020.
    • Grades 7-12: The secondary commitment form will be available beginning 9:00 AM September 12, 2020 through 9:00 PM on September 20, 2020.

Please know students attending school in-person will be expected to follow the safety protocols outlined in the SCM Roadmap to Reopening 2020 plan, including universal masking and physical distancing for all students and staff. Families are encouraged to pursue the virtual learning option if wearing a mask during the school day is problematic or of concern.

We realize you may have questions about Phase II of our Roadmap to Reopening 2020 plan. Elementary principals will be sharing building specific reopening plans tomorrow. JYMS and MHS reopening plans will be shared September 16th.

We appreciate the support of the SCM Board of School Trustees in allowing us to make this announcement prior to our next public school board meeting on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. We value the continued partnership we share with the SCM school community.
