Beyond the Cave is a special partnership between Mishawaka Education Foundation and School City of Mishawaka that began in the 2010-11 school year. The goal of Beyond the Cave is to help School City students explore and plan for career education options following high school.
The Beyond the Cave Center is one part of the partnership. In the BtC Center, trained volunteers assist students and their parents to explore careers and post-secondary education and to succeed in applying for admission and scholarships. The BtC Center is open from August through November and January through March through appointments scheduled through the Mishawaka High School guidance department (574-254-7483). Collegiate school supplies are handed out to students visiting the BtC Center to foster a college-going culture around the high school.
BtC sponsors the SAT review class for Mishawaka High School students each semester. Encouraging the students to think about college early in their education is another part of the partnership. Almost 400 pennants hang throughout School City buildings, representing the collegiate alma mater of each teacher, administrator and staff member. Each pennant invites students to talk about college options. Over 71 different colleges are represented throughout the hallways of our buildings.
Celebrating success is yet another component of Beyond the Cave. We proudly celebrate our seniors’ success in the hallways of Mishawaka High School. Each pennant represents a college that admitted one of our seniors. Scholarships are also celebrated in the hallways. We also published our first book: High School Goes By Fast. We are currently looking for volunteers and funding to continue expanding this wonderful partnership to help Mishawaka students succeed.
