Four students from John Young Middle School showcased their research skills and scientific curiosity at the Northern Indiana Science and Engineering Fair (NIRSEF) in early March, earning several top awards and special recognitions.

Seventh grader Oliver Fullerton received third place in his category for his research examining the effectiveness of mouthwash.

Seventh grader Ellie Jacobs earned first place in her category for her research on polymer clay. In addition to her category win, Ellie received both the Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) Junior Researcher Award and Thermo Fisher’s Innovator Award for her outstanding work.

Among the eighth-grade participants, Owen Burns earned first place in his category for his project exploring different dish-cleaning methods.

Eighth grader Noah DeVreese also earned first place in his category for his research on bridge design. His project was further recognized with the Nripen Biswas Physics Award and the Thermo Fisher’s Innovator Award.

As a result of their exceptional projects, Ellie Jacobs and Noah DeVreese have qualified to compete at the Hoosier State Science and Engineering Fair, which will take place later this month.

John Young Middle School is proud of these students for their dedication to scientific research and for representing their school and community with excellence.
